Fritz Lang's Metropolis

Original 1927 theatrical release poster

This 1927 science-fiction epic from the silent film era is set in a sprawling Utopian Art Deco city called Metropolis.

Set in the year 2026 in a future society divided by economic classes. The working class and the well...um...the one percent, no, check that make it the uber wealthy Mnuchin/Trump type .01 percent class. The Working Class live in a dystopian underground hellscape beneath the machines they operate to keep the surface world working in tune to the rhythm of the Uber Class who live in opulent homes and a life of grandeur.

The two main protagonists Freder and Maria each come from one of the classes. Freder is the son of the Lord of Metropolis Johhan Fredersen while Maria is a children's educator in the working class underground dwellings and leader of the workers.

One day while reaping the rewards of inherited wealth Freder spots Maria who had brought a group of working class children to the surface to observe the life style and gloriousness of the surface world. Maria and the kids are spotted by the authorities then taken back to the underground but not before Freder hears Maria speaking about equality of humanity to the crowd gathered in the Eternal Gardens. Freder is so intrigued he follows the group back to the underground and is horrified by what he sees. He witnesses a deadly accident and explosion on the machine level where men labor in misery. Can you say OSHA? Can you say "Live Better, Work Union!" but I digress.

Anguished by what he saw, Freder confronts his father only to find out Johhan truly believes the surface dwelling elites have a birthright to their luxurious lifestyle and the working class are there to serve them, wretched existence or not.

Freder resolves to go it alone without his father's help. He decides the best place to start is by contacting Maria. Freder goes underground and takes a job while he looks for Maria.

Are you intrigued?

No spoilers here, you will have to watch  Fritz Lang's Metropolis to see how it all plays out.

2026 is just around the corner people.

With the American populace reacting to the beginnings of World War II and wartime patriotism stirring, the Shield debuted as the first patriotically themed hero. He was soon followed by three other patriotic comic characters: Captain America (December 1940), Minute-Man (Feb. 1941), and Captain Battle (May 1941).

Fun Fact: Captain America's creators were forced to change his shield from a regular shield to a round one because the original shield resembled the Shield's chest insignia.

1994 Film: The Fantastic Four

For as low budget as this FF4 version is. It is still not as bad as that 2005 travesty of  a cinematic war crime that made $330,600,000.

Or the 2015 botched reboot where Stan Lee the executive producer proved that he is either greedy, senile or just doesn't give a shit any more to have gave the green light to such an off the wall mangling of the "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine" He has since had his name removed from ALL connection to the movie.

As for the Rise of the Silver Surfer where one of the preeminent characters of the Marvel world Galactus is reduced to the form of a cloud and the Silver Surfer was as sleep inducing as a double dose of Ambien without the thrill ride of the lucid dreams. The 1994 film without any CGI and a $1,000,000 budget versus $130,000,000 budget is time better spent.

Rotten Tomatoes Agrees:

FF4 Unreleased: 29% Approval Rating
FF4 2005: 27% Approval Rating
FF4 Rise of the Silver Surfer: 37% Approval Rating
Fant4stic: 9% Approval Rating

Sure they all suck but just give the 1994 movie a watch. You will not regret it.

Vintage Sci-Fi Radio Program: DIMENSION X

Dimension X was first heard on NBC April 8, 1950, and ran until September 29, 1951.

Strange that so little good science fiction came out of radio; they seem ideally compatible, both relying heavily on imagination. Some fine isolated science fiction stories were developed on the great anthology shows, Suspense and Escape. But until the premiere of Dimension X -- a full two decades after network radio was established -- there were no major science fiction series of broad appeal to adults. This show dramatized the work of such young writers as Ray Bradbury, Robert (Psycho) Bloch, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, and Kurt Vonnegut. In-house script writer was Ernest Kinoy, who adapted the master works and contributed occasional storied of his own.

Dimension X was a very effective demonstration of what could be done with science fiction on the air. It came so late that nobody cared, but some of the stories stand as classics of the medium. Bradbury's "Mars Is Heaven" is as gripping today as when first heard. His "Martian Chronicles" was one of the series' most impressive offerings.

Dimension X played heavily on an "adventures in time and space, told in future tense" theme. Actors who worked regularly on the show included Joe Di Santis, Wendell Holmes, Santos Ortega, Joseph Julian, Jan Miner, Roger De Koven, John Gibson, Ralph Bell, John Larkin, Les Damon, and Mason Adams. It was directed by Fred Weihe and Edward King. The deep-voiced narrator was Norman Rose.

The series played heavily on the "X" factor in the title, as did X Minus One a few years later. The signature was boomed out of and echo chamber as "DIMENSION X X X X X x x x x x . . . "
