Story: The Stone Sentinels of Giant Island (8 Pages)
Published in the late fifties The Stone Sentinels of Giant Island is clearly based on the Moai created by the Rapa Nui people of the island of the same name. Today if a young kid hears about something mysterious he or she can go straight to the google machine and instantly debunk said mystery. Imagine a kid in 1959 reading this story whose only exposure to the Moai is most likely an article in National Geographic or maybe a black and white photograph in a supermarket tabloid about "The Stone Heads of Easter Island" or quite possibly never heard of them. A kid in the late fifties could read this tale and imagine it to be "real" because based on limited knowledge of the Moai at the time and the lack of resources to investigate them or the Pacific made it more plausible. The real mystery the reader is left with? Are the Moai actually alien sentinels?
Julius Schwartz story is as gripping as any modern sci-fi story and is a flashback to a 1930s era King Kong type crew finding then exploring an undiscovered island in the Pacific ocean with Jack Kirby's artwork to bring the story to life, eight pages is not enough.
