Assignment: Outer Space recounts the events taking place in December 2116.

A space station crew undertakes a perilous mission to prevent the runaway star cruiser Alpha Two from destroying planet Earth.

Compared to Americano science fiction. Italian sci-fi was very progressive:

Like most Sci-Fi movies of the era. There is beautiful woman on the crew and like most movies of the day. The woman is the cause of disharmony among the men. At least she has an important job on the crew as the navigator. Which is something you would never see in an American production in the 1960s.

Also of note is a black man in space. For the most part black people didn't exist in the future or in space until Star Trek came along and then not again until Alien. The character Al portrayed by Archie Savage is more than just crew member "X" who is destined to die early in the film. Al is the best pilot in the space program and plays a major role in crew.
