An extraterrestrial with the Green Lantern Corps named Abin Sur crashes his space craft in the desert southwestern Unites States. A common theme of the era. And with his final thoughts he scours the planet for a human worthy of the power the Green Lantern. 

He finds one man proven to be fearless and honest. That man is Hal Jordan.
